French participation in the ceasefire monitoring mechanism in Beirut, under the authority of Brigadier Guillaume Ponchin

The ceasefire agreement signed between Israel and Lebanon on 26 November, which came into force on 27 November, provides for a ceasefire monitoring mechanism chaired by the United States. The ceasefire agreement is the fruit of diplomatic efforts made with the United States over many months. France calls on all the parties to comply with it, over the long term, and end any action that threatens it.

France is represented on the monitoring mechanism by Brigadier Guillaume Ponchin. He will be supported by a dozen military and civilian personnel from the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs and the Ministry for the Armed Forces.

In close conjunction with the Lebanese Armed Forces, Israeli Defence Forces and United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, the monitoring mechanism will oversee the implementation of the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon. It will also work with the Military Technical Committee for Lebanon to help with scaling up the Lebanese armed forces and their deployment in southern Lebanon; France reaffirms its support to them, in the framework of the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701.
