TfL is committed to boosting walking levels in London, in line with the Mayor's Transport Strategy
Transport for London (TfL) has teamed up with Go Jauntly to announce a brand new Walk London challenge. The challenge will encourage participants to walk at least 20 minutes a day throughout May with the chance of unlocking milestone badges. Londoners and visitors can sign up to the challenge for free on the Go Jauntly app.
All participants will have access to high-quality walking routes that are available on the app and have the opportunity to connect with nature. Throughout the challenge participants will be able to receive helpful walking tips, walk inspirations and motivational reminders.
Go Jauntly has unlimited walking routes for people to enjoy across the UK and Dynamic Green Routes where people can find a wide variety of walks from their doorstep. In addition to more than 300 routes in London, the routes available during the Walk London Challenge are specifically designed to be easily accessible by public transport and participants can walk as little or as far as they want by walking them in sections.
The routes are:
Capital Ring
A walk through London's greenest suburbs, this 78-mile route is divided into 15 shorter walks, including Richmond Park, Wimbledon Common and Eltham Palace.
Green Chain
A network of straight and circular walks across South East London, the route takes in dozens of woods and parks, as well as the Thames Barrier and Crystal Palace.
Jubilee Greenway
Celebrating the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, this path for walkers and cyclists links the Olympic and Paralympic Games venues, including the O2 Arena, Greenwich Park and the Serpentine.
Jubilee Walkway
This route, created to celebrate the Queen's Silver Jubilee, encompasses London's most iconic landmarks, from St Paul's to Buckingham Palace, and includes Bloomsbury and the City on the way.
Lea Valley
A glimpse into Britain's industrial past, the path follows the 18 miles along the Lee Navigation towpath, from Waltham Abbey to the Thames at Limehouse Basin.
London Outer Orbital Path (LOOP)
The London Outer Orbital Path, or LOOP, almost completely encircles Greater London. Nearly 150 miles are split into 24, bite-sized walks.
Thames Path
A 40-mile stretch of easy, level walking on both sides of the river, the path stretches from Hampton Court Palace through the heart of London to East India Dock.
Walking provides people with an affordable and easy way to support good health, and physical and mental wellbeing while protecting and improving the environment. More people traveling on foot will help connect communities and reduce road danger as well as help address the triple challenges of air pollution, the climate crisis and traffic congestion.
Christina Calderato, TfL's Director of Transport Strategy and Policy yesterday said:
"We're really pleased to launch a new Walk London challenge in partnership with Go Jauntly. Walking is a fantastic way to get around and explore London, and getting more people to walk regularly is essential for the health and future prosperity of our city. We are committed to making London a more walkable city and we encourage Londoners and visitors to take part."
Hana Sutch, Go Jauntly's Co-founder and CEO yesterday said:
"We know that fitting exercise into busy lifestyles is hard. A 20 minute walk a day can really help maintain good physical and mental health. Everyone benefits from Londoners and visitors walking more. It would be fantastic if the public all signed up to the Walk London challenge. It's fun, free, and a great way to explore London's gems."
London's Walking and Cycling Commissioner, Will Norman, yesterday said:
"Walking provides people with an easy, affordable way to maintain their mental and physical wellbeing while protecting and improving the environment - it's also a fantastic way to get out and explore our capital. TfL and GoJauntly's new challenge encouraging Londoners and visitors to the city to walk at least 20 minutes a day is a great way to kickstart a new habit and discover new parts of London in the process. I am looking forward to taking part and trying some new routes."
Last year, TfL published a new Leisure Walking Plan to boost levels of walking in the capital. The new action plan will enhance and expand leisure walking routes and better connect London's communities with green spaces. As part of the plan, TfL partnered with Go Jauntly to digitise the Walk London network and it is now available through the Go Jauntly app.
