Q: Following the coup d'état in Sudan, might you reconsider your promise to cancel Sudan's debt?
A: France has supported the democratic transition process in Sudan since early 2019 and has been a staunch partner of that country in every area in which we cooperate. The process of canceling the Sudanese debt was part of that. I want to remind you that it was launched as part of the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) Initiative, as agreed at the Paris Conference on Sudan on May 17, in support of the political process. A Paris Club agreement was reached on July 15 whereby each creditor country had to sign a bilateral agreement with Sudan. Clearly, the military coup on October 25 calls that process into question.
