Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian will be taking part in the One Ocean Summit in Brest today and tomorrow. The February 9- 11th event, which was organized at the initiative of President Macron under the auspices of the French Presidency of the Council of the European Union, serves to rally the international community around the ocean. Franck Riester, Minister Delegate for Foreign Trade and Economic Attractiveness, attached to the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, will also be in attendance in Brest this Friday.
This international summit, which is part of President Macron's blue diplomacy efforts, demonstrates France's determination to promote concrete, effective multilateralism, in keeping with the One Planet Summit. The numerous heads of state and government in attendance will commit to a shared vision of the oceans and to the solutions that are needed to address pressure associated with climate change, pollution and overfishing.
The commitments that are made during the One Ocean Summit will underpin the decisive global action agenda, which began with the IUCN World Conservation Congress in 2021 and will continue with the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) in Nairobi, the COP15 Biodiversity Conference in Kunming, China, the UN Ocean Conference in Lisbon in June and the COP27 Climate Change Conference in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, in November.
Throughout the summit today and notably in the presence of the European Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Virginijus Sinkevi?ius, Jean-Yves Le Drian will reiterate the exemplary role that a ?Europe of the sea? could play in international ocean governance. Jean-Yves Le Drian and the Minister of Marine Affairs, Annick Girardin, will also take part in a forum bringing together distinguished sailors who have witnessed the threats to the ocean.
